Hello Everyone,

Welcome to class! I really enjoy teaching this class and I hope that you enjoy taking it. I look forward to working with you all.

Class does not start until the 6th, but I want to give you some information about how the class works and what to expect. Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns at ruhl2@wisc.edu.

Best regards,

Prof. Ruhl

Schedule:

This class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00-5:15. Class time will have me projecting my computer screen onto the wall and working through some coding material while you follow along on your laptop. We will take a few breaks during the class for you all to work on problems while I (and Satyen and Mitchell, the TAs) walk around and help anyone who is stuck.

Course webpage:

I use two webpages. This setup allows me the flexibility of a "normal" webpage for posting materials, but gives you all the convenience of having due dates and submissions in Canvas.

All course materials and a detailed schedule are available at: badgerdata.org/pages/econ-570. This is where to go for slides, notebooks, data etc. The course webpage is a continual work in progress.

All homework, project, and exam submissions are handled through Canvas. I also use the announcements feature of Canvas to post, well, announcements.

Is there anything I should do before class?

  1. Keep an eye out for an email from the Social Sciences Computing Cooperative (SSCC) with your logon information for Winstat, the servers we will be using for coding.

  2. Make sure you have a laptop that will connect to the campus wifi. Bring it to class everyday!

  3. Get outside and enjoy some nature.
